1290 Square Meters Istanbul
A.P.C., Andersons, Arc’teryx Veilance, Dag- mar, Elka, Fjallraven, Grenson, Levis Made and Crafted, Levis Vintage Clothing, Mini Rodini, Nike Sports- wear, Mini Market, Mismo, Our Legacy, Porter, Raf Simons x Fred Perry, Ruff & Huddle, Studio Nicholson, Still Good, Surface to Air, The Inoue Brothers, The Good Flock, Won Hundred gibi hepsi tasarımcıların sınırlı sayıda ürettiği özel tasarım ayakkabılar, çantalar, giysiler, el yapımı mücevherler vardı burada...
The 290 square meters community began with a man working in a bank. I agree an unlikely place to start. But between the balance sheets and bad coffee something began to galvanize in this mans mind. He wanted to do something worthwhile, a dream was bubbling away inside that wouldn't leave him alone until he would answer it. His childhood passion for discovery eventually nudged him off of the swivel chair and told him to 'take the risk'. He dived into the unknown, leaving the dull office and bad fitting suits behind. It was a small triumph, a tip of the hat to anyone who has had the courage to climb out of their safety
Growing up tugging on the flares of his fashionable parents, his dad would take him on visits to a factory in Belgium where the family's very own jeans brand was being produced. He would often take the back routes to avoid paying the duties, the trip become a real adventure and set the ball rolling in this young boy's mind. As a teenager he developed a curiosity for strange and beautiful things. When he was 14 he borrowed some money and took a day trip to Paris so he could get his hands on a backpack nobody else had. He needed to touch it, run his fingers over the stitching and smell the fabric. This search for exclusivity stayed with him until one day it persuaded him to open 90 square meters on the KNSM island in Amsterdam, the little brother of the now bigger and older 290 square meters to house and sell the stuff that he really likes from shoes, bags, clothes to handmade jewellery. He wanted people to find the things he had found too, to share discoveries. It became a place to bring in inspiration and let it play between the walls. It is far from the high street.
This man is Ido de Voos. The founder of 90 square meters and later 290 square meters, whose eye never sleeps, his attention to detail and need for inspiration is what gets him up in the morning. 290 square meters has established itself as a 'come and find me store'. Those that are in the know or those that hit it by happenstance are treated like friends. Everyone brings something different to the mix. Their first art show was by the Amsterdam based street-art collective: The London Police and since then 35 more shows have taken place with artists ranging from Miss Van (France) to Kami & Sasu (Japan) to the photographic duo UZI Part B (UK) and the personal work of the Wieden & Kennedy creative team.
In addition to selling products and launching art shows more unique projects have found their way to 90 square meters. A few years ago, Nike launched their world premier shoe project Nike id at 90 square meters. The first shop in the world where lovers of discovery could create their own custom Nikes. 290 square meters now nestles off of one of the main arteries in the heart of the city. It lies underground in an old bank vault. The perfect setting for valuable one of a kinds, it's like stepping into the imagination of a boy who couldn't sit still, never leaving a stone unturned and wants to
Like most things that begin out of a passion, happy coincidences are never far behind. When you're not too sure what you're doing things find you. This happened with Ido's chance business meetings, one thing has always led to another. They always say fortune favors the brave or the stupid and wherever luck hangs out it has taken a shine to Ido's way of working. Today things happen at speed, keep up is the tricky part, it easy to be forgotten. The next move for the team at 290 square meters was to open a store in Istanbul… Not a strange choice considering the fact that it lies on the seams of east and west, it is like the great zip of the world. Here is where Ali comes in. The man of a thousand smiles; all of which are sincere. He is their go-to in Istanbul, he knows the streets better than most Taksi men. After an initial meeting in the Amsterdam store, Ali confessed he would like to open a 290 square meters agency & shop in Istanbul. He invited Ido to 'his city'. Ido found himself in a melting pot of tradition and modernity. Finding contradictions around every corner, a witness to a city of beautiful mismatches. Ido was instantly hooked. So the next instalment of 290 square meters was born. A 2213,07 km jump away from Amsterdam where you're immediately greeted like a brother and whether you like it or not you're gonna be man hugged like a brother…
When you're in the acquisition business and you find it hard selling yourself the internet can be the perfect place to hide out. The cultural demands of today say online is the way forward. And you're here reading this now so it must be true. Within these pages you will find a showcase of wares from 290 square meters showroom like a giant bizarre and if you actual print out every page and lay them side by side it covers exactly 290 square meters of floor space! This also helps to bring to life 290 square meters philosophy of seeing what you buy, touching it before you buy- experiencing you're very own store in your bedroom. At first Ido had a problem with seeing beyond the pixels so he joined forces with another friend Chris Souren, who is bringing this online store to life. They are like two boys playing together making it work this way or that, tackling the future head on with curiosity and rolled up sleeves but keeping their business caps on tight.
